Impressions/Identities
This is an installation that was done in 2001
and the result of a year-long collaborative collection. The idea
started after the installation of MMImpressions. I sent out a postcard
with a picture of that installation and a short statement on the back
requesting thumbprints from anyone that was interested. Here is a small
segment from the text on the postcard:
I am interested in
humans as a group that simultaneously have similar
characteristics and different qualities. How are we all unique and
special in terms of the choices we make and our physical presence?...
Please create a thumbprint(s) for my collection of human identities.
There are only four small requirements that I ask:
1. The impression be
of your
thumb, reflecting your physical identity.
2. Your impression be made of some malleable and permanent
three-dimensional material.
3. The final choices as to how your impression is fired, finished,
colored, etc. should reflect your personal identity through the choices
you make.
4. Think about the number of impressions that you submit.
The result was over 1,000 people and a few animals donating their
thumbprints to a collection of approximately 7,000 thumbprints. I
designed the room, built the tables, and placed all the thumbprints in
the installation you see here.
